2 days in Dresden..enough ?

Hi we are (family of 4 2 kids 4 and 8 yeard old) will be in Dresden next summer. We will arriuve from berlin in the morning. and we plan to stay 2 nights (so something like a day in a half in Dresden). We plan to visit old town (and maybe the military museum) and we also want to go to Bastei. Is it doable in the time we have ? Our kids are not very agile/patient/ good walkers. What would be the best way to get to the bastei with them ?

Thanks !

I was visiting the area east of Dresden (Sächische Schweiz) a few years ago. I visited the Königstein fortress one day, and was going to visit the Bastei the second day, but it's just a bridge out through the rocks and a bit of a trip to get to, so I passed on it.

I really enjoyed the fortress. It's not hard to get to. Take the S-Bahn along the Elbe to the east towards Bad Schandau. Get off in the town of Königstein. There are buses from the town to the fortress.

math,

I'd suggest at least three nights in Dresden, which will provide two full days of touring, but four nights would be better. There are some interesting sights there, and two days would allow you to see the military museum and also some of the other sights such as the magnificent Frauenkirche. As your kids "are not very agile/patient/ good walkers", you'll have to allow a bit more time to get around and for rest breaks.

Hi,

I would count on the entire afternoon for seeing the Military Hist Museum. That's located in Dresden Neustadt. It's huge. That area of Dresden was basically untouched by the firebombing as was the building that houses the Military Museum am Olbrichtplatz.

Visiting the old town doesn't take long since the reconstructed area is rather small, and I don't think your kids will enjoy the main sights of the old town, the museums, very much. I think they will like the Armoury, the Turkish Chamber and the Transport Museum (which is not that big).
After WW2 and the destruction of the old town the area around the Blue Wonder bridge became the new center of the city. This area is very nice and should be visited too. Around the 1930s it was the most expensive quarter of Europe. It has vineyards, a wine village, beer gardens, posh villas, castles, a funicular and a suspension railway.

You can get to the Bastei either by steam boat or train, but maybe your kids will get bored after 30min on the steam boat. Take the train to Wehhlen, and there you just have to use a ferry to get to the other side of the river.
With kids I would also recommend to see Königstein fortress (which is also in Saxon Switzerland). You can do both on a single day if you start early.

And I would also recommend to see Meissen. It offers a picturesque old town overlooked by a mighty castle (and a cathedral), something all kids like. Meissen too can be done either by train or steam boat.

It's been reported in the press that the VW factory in Dresden will close in March, due to the company's well-known problems, and possibly reopen in 2019 to build electric cars.

Thanks for those answer ! Whe are not still decided if we should book 2 or 3 nights (which would mean we have to cut a night somewhere else). For now we have :

Berlin 5 nights
Dresden 2 nights
Nuremberg (+ daytrip) 4 nights
Salzburg 2 nights
Munich (+ daytrip to Garmisch) 4 nights
Rhine+ Moselle (Cochem, Trier, Bacharach,Cologne) 6 nights
Luxembourg 1 night

From the bus #237 is there a long or hard walk to the bridge ?

No, I did this with a 2 year old no problem. IIRC, it was just a few hundred meters. Getting there, wandering around and getting back does take the better part of a day so if you do one full day in Dresden you will use it here.

Thanks !

Cochem seems to be a good travel base. Our plan was to travel from Munich to Cologne, stay one night there and then go to our base in Moselle or Rhine. If we put a night in Luxembourg its because our return flight is from there at 10:30 in the morning.

Dresden 2 nights

Nuremberg (+ daytrip) 4 nights

This looks odd to me. I would rate Dresden higher than Nuremberg. Not just the city itself but also the surroundings.

From Nuremberg we want to do daytrip to Bamberg, Rothenburg,Würzburg and Regensburg ( notre all of them !) and go to Playmobil park, that's why we need 4 nights there.
