We are in Burgundy and want to do a couple of days in the Bkack Forest after a stop in Colmar. Any suggestions for a good town to stay in? This is a bit last minute and we booked 2 weeks here in Burgundy and we need a change of scenery.. Thanks in advance, Steve
I'm not saying don't go to the Black Forest... but the Vosges mountains in France across the Rhine from the Black Forest are a virtual mirror image. You'll have to go through them anyway on the way to Colmar.
Part of the charm of the Black Forest is that it is made up of small villages with wooden "cuckoo clock" houses, some of which are hotels. The only real town in the southern Black Forest is Titisee, but that is just a few streets of hotels, better to stay in a village.
I assume you will have a car. Touring the Black Forest by public transport is possible, but requires planning.
The Black Forest is a better choice than the Vosges, but two places you could visit before or after Colmar are the wine villages along the "Route du vin" which runs along the Vosges foothills. Many pretty vilages here. Also "Haut Koenigsbourg" which is a spectacularly located restaured castle north-west of Colmar
We stayed in the little town of Gengenbach in the BF. Lovely walkable town, very small and quaint. Loads of charm. We rented a car to get there but then left the car at the parking area near our B&B and took the train to the towns of Strasbourg and Triberg. Then we drove to Schilltach. Also went to the Vogtsbauernhof Museum, a wonderful outdoor museum of actual farmhouses dating back to the 1600's. Gengenbach was a great home base to do exploring. Go to Trip Advisor to see recommendations of hotels. We would definitely go back to this area!
Agree with Alexandra on Gengenbach - stay there and ride the rails to the other Black Forest villages along the Black Forest Railway and the Kinzig Valley. Ask your hosts for a KONUS card - it's free and allows you to use trains and buses throughout the region for free.

Black Forest Railway and towns; Haslach is a nice town on this route as well.

We stayed in Badenweiler at Behringers Traube and loved it. We also stayed in Baden Baden at Merkur and loved that too..
Had a great time in the Black Forest. Ended up staying in Bad Petersol at the Pension Drei Tannen. Very good location with great prices ( my wife and I had a double and my daughter had a single room for 96 E a night). Highly recommended....
