2 Days free: Frankfurt to Trier

I have 2 free days in Germany. I will be starting in Frankfurt and ending in Trier. Where should I go and what should I do? I am open to ideas in those cities, but I am also open to travelling to other cities in between or close. What are your suggestions?

Please mention the month of the year. Rhine boats are seasonal, and many events (like wine festivals) are also seasonal. Have you been to Germany before? Are you more interested in art museums or beer? Are you planning to travel mainly by train? Are you starting in Frankfurt because you will have flown there, or what?

I will be there in Spring time. This is my first time in Germany and will only be travelling by train. I am open to most experiences (food, drink, museum, tour on foot, etc.)

We stayed in Bacharach on the way from Frankfurt to Trier, although any of the Rhine River towns would probably be a good bet. Its not quite half way, but in the right direction. Check to see if there are any festivals going on at that time in any of those towns.

I also agree about Bacharach. It is beautiful and you can walk up to Burg Stahleck for a beautiful Rhine view. The town is quiet at night and lovely then too. The Rhine front park is also a nice place to sit. All that if you want to relax.

It’s been awhile since I visited Trier. We did a whirlwind day trip there and I wished we’d had more time.

In Bacharach Instay at Irmgard Orth’s b&b. the Am Malerwinkel is in a very picturesque location. All accomodations are listed on the town website - www.bacharach.de - although for some reason it is down this A.M.

The Cafe Rusticana is where we usually eat. Good prices, pleasant owner

I'd recommend taking the train from Frankfurt to Bingen, catching the KD boat for about an hour cruise of the nicest castle viewing on the Rhine. You can hop off in Bacharach and take a tour around town. Hop back on the boat (or take the train) to St. Goar, and head directly across the street to Rheinhotel (http://rheinhotel-st-goar.de/?lang=2) for an overnight. Gil will take care of you and provide an excellent breakfast. After breakfast, take a stroll up the hill to Burg Rheinfels. Then hop the ferry over to St. Goarhausen, take the train to Braubach and spend the afternoon at Marksburg Castle. Catch a train to Koblenz and on to Trier.
