2 days for Munich surroundings

Hello all,

We are a family of four in Munich on December 21-23, and planning to side trips to the following places:

Day 1: Nuremburg Christmas Market and town
We have been to Munich and Frankfurt Christmas markets on two separate occasions, but I have heard a lot about Nuremburg market, what is the opinon re: Nuremburg market. We are vegetarians, so I am not sure we will be able to enjoy the full range of food options :). Is it better to rent a car to Nuremburg or take the train? I was pricing tickets, one day rental car was half the price of a round trip ticket. If you add cost of petrol, it might still be economical to rent a car and that may provide some flexibiltiy.

Day 2: Salzburg
Trip to enjoy the post card town, castle etc, taking the train and no car rental.

Please do let me know your thoughts.

Thank you

MK

I am a solo traveler/senior citizen and returned from Germany and Austria on December 7th. I spent 5 nights in Salzburg and 3 nights in Munich. While in Salzburg, the snow storm arrived and blanketed the town with approximately 5-8 inches. It was lovely to watch the snowfall while sipping my glughvine at the markets. The following day transportation completely shut down, no flights, no trains. My daytrip to Vienna was cancelled. Trains were still not running on Monday, 4th. So I returned to Munich by bus and flights opened for my return trip home.
Did I have a great time? Absolutely!!!
I'm already making plans for next year.

Just finished a trip with a 21-year-old to Salzburg and Vienna. His favorite thing on the trip was the self-guided tour of the fortress at Salzburg. His favorite Christmas market we visited? Salzburg. Salzburg is definitely worthwhile.

I've been to the Nuremberg market in the past. On a weekend night, it is oppressively crowded... like can't move crowded. A friend and I rented a car to get there and stayed 3 nights. Should have taken public transport as we both travel light.

I like how Dave described the Nuremberg market: oppressively crowded. I agree. Consider a relatively quick train trip to Regensburg - by train. They have a wonderful Christmas market there - actually more than one.

BTW, check out pricing via the Bayern train ticket. Someone more savvy than me may chime in with actual info.
