2 Day (1 night) Itinerary Between Frankfurt and Munich

Hi everyone! My travel partner and I are landing in Frankfurt at 8:00 AM on Sept 18, and we’re looking for itinerary suggestions for that day, an overnight stay, and the next day before heading to Munich. (I know this is a VERY short period of time to squeeze things in).. so we need help deciding what stops are the most suggested.

We’re not planning to stay in Frankfurt at all, and we’re comfortable jumping into travel right away. We’ll have a rental car (can opt for train as well) and need to be in Munich by the evening of Sept 19, so we have:

Sept 18: All day to explore with one or two stops, plus an overnight stay
Sept 19: A morning/midday stop en route to Munich would be great before dropping the car and checking in

We would love opinions on stops & must-sees as well as one overnight location (charming Altstadt with good dinner & wine?), before heading to Munich. We’re especially interested in less touristy medieval towns with charm, culture, and history, and we love a good scenic drive or hidden gem. Not as interested in big cities this early in the trip.

For an idea, here are some we've thought about: Heidelberg (too touristy? but close to Frankfurt), Bamberg, Regensburg, Bad Windsheim? Then a more Black Forest route - Baden-Baden, Gegenbach, Freiburg? This might be TOO much driving/out of the way from Munich.

Thanks!

I think the Black Forest is likely going to be really stressful, and suggest to look for something along the road.
Heidelberg is very touristy, albeit popular among internationals.
Close, a bit smaller and with a focus more on local tourists are Weinheim (Bergstrasse), Bensheim, Heppenheim, Schwetzingen.
Along the ride from there you might consider Esslingen, Geislingen (both have some timbered houses) or Blaustein with its famous well.
Alternatively you can take the northern route going by Würzburg and Nuremberg, but those are larger (albeit nice).
Smaller are Weissenburg with its still largely intact medieval wall or Eichstaett with its baroque center and large castle.

You might want to reconsider driving just after arrival. You will be tired, sleepy, jet lagged, and on unfamilar ground. Most people (self included) shouldn't be allowed to handle sharp instruments (much less drive) in that condition. And the area around Frankfurt isn't the easiest place to drive even in the best of circumstances. Even a small fender bender at the start of the trip will put a damper on the rest of the journey.

Germany's train system will get you to Munich without the hassle of driving. And you can still make a stop at a town along the way.

Just offering food for thought.

Sounds like you are aiming for the opening day at Oktoberfest. Like TC, I'd stick with trains, as you can get them right at Frankfurt airport. Head for somewhere in the direction of Munich, and don't underestimate how tired you will feel after an all night flight. Bamberg would be a good overnight. Since you will likely change trains in Wuerzburg, it is worth a few hours stopover.
