19-Minutes transfer time between platforms at Frankfurt (Main) Hbf - Will I make it?

Hi,
I am new to Frankfurt Hbf (Main) and would like to have your comments on whether or not I will be able to have enough time moving between platforms.
After visiting Basel, Switzerland in early October 2025, I plan to take the DB Bahn train leaving from Basel SBB to Utretch Centraal, The Netherlands.
The current train schedule calls for 19-minutes transfer time between platforms 9 and 21 at Frankfurt Hbf (Main). Being unfamiliar with Frankfurt Hbf, its surrounding and with luggage, I can only rely on scheduling some extra transfer time from the DB Bahn website.

Until then, I thank you and appreciate any comments/responses you may have.

If trains are widely on time I would be very optimistic.

Station page of Frankfurt (Main) Hbf incl. track and site plan:
https://www.bahnhof.de/en/frankfurt-main-hbf

It is a terminus station, so it is meaningful to reach a front door in means of driving direction before train reaches the station.

In view of the construction sites on the Rhine route, I would be skeptical and plan more buffer time in Frankfurt.

Thank you for your comments and the Frankfurt Hbf link. Your responses are greatly valuable, and I really appreciated very much.
Given the information I have read about the train station and how busy it can get, my original thought was to get extra transfer time.
Thankfully, the DB Bahn website gives users a way to request extra times, not one but two times within a journey. I will definitely take advantage using the provided tool from this website to request more times.
Thank you kindly.

It the trains are on time you will be fine. Changing trains only involves walking from one train to another, and the trains will be less than 100m away from each other. You could probably do the change in 3 minutes if you know your way around.
You may well end up on platform 21 before the train is even there, and will wish that the railways didn't make you wast all that time.

However trains are often delayed in Germany, unfortunately. So keep an eye on the times on the DB Navigator app. If you miss your connection just take the next train. If you have reservations just head to the ticket office to have them moved to the next train.

What is your intended travel date? We can give better advice if we now that, as there are lots of days that trains run to a different schedule than normal.

For "early October 2025" I do not see any major planned construction works along your first part of the route Basel - Frankfurt.

See and use date filter for map of planned rail traffic disruption by DB.

I am more concerned about the communicated monthly punctuality KPIs of DB long-distance trains (Fernverkehr) which got significantly worse in June:

  • Operational punctuality (up to 6 minutes late) on long-distance services: 57.1 % (nearly 5 percentage points down compared to April)
  • Passenger punctuality on long-distance services: 62.9 % (over 4 percentage points down compared to April)
  • Compared to 2-3 years ago Deutsche Bahn do not even try to give explanations for such bad KPIs.

If nothing else, walk through the train all the way to the front so you can get off there as soon as the train stops. Give yourself plenty of time to do this if you are seated several cars behind.
Since Frankfurt is a dead-end station, all you have to do is jump off and walk down to the platform you need. Takes a few minutes if the trains are on time. If time is short, get on your next train at the 1st open door and walk through the cars to your seat.

These 19 minute single connections at Frankfurt Hbf departing Basel SBB go every 2 hours: 8:13, 10:13, 12:13, 14;13. Which are you planning on? If a morning departure and you miss your connection due to a late arriving train, you can just take the next one 2 hours later. Nice break with plenty of restaurants at the station to relax.

WengenK,
My travel date is October 7, 2025.
According to the DB Bahn schedule, I see that the train leaves Basel SBB at 8:13am with ICE 372 (nach Berlin Ostbahnhof), arrives at Frankfurt (Main) Hbf at 11:08am, Flatform 9 and with 19-minutes transfer time to the next DB train.

The next one is ICE 126 (nach Amsterdam Centraal) leaves Frankfurt (Main) Hbf at 11:27am, arrives at Utretch Centraal at 14:59pm.
I can request extra transfer time at Frankfurt (Main) Hbf if necessary; however, the next direct DB train with similar route is 2 hours and 19minutes later – the ICE 124 leaves the station at 13:27pm, arrives Utretch at 16:59pm.

Since I do not have any experience traveling by train and through Frankfurt (Main) Hbf, but love sightseeing, all of your advice, tips are great and as always, I have learned a lot from many of you experienced travelers. Thank you.

Thank you Sam. My last resort is to take a nice 2-hour lunch break at Frankfurt (Main) Hbf. Hopefully, I will arrive at Utretch Centraal at a reasonable time since October time seems to get dark quickly.
