12 days in Munich over Christmas

Hello everyone, my wife, two-year old, and mother will be in Munich for 12 days over Christmas. We have several visits to markets and cities planned, as well as day trips planned but have several "rest days" in Munich. It is my wife and I's second time to the city so we have done most main things during the summer season and while we'll need to repeat a few things for my mom... I'm curious if anyone could send a few ideas our way on other things to do that we haven't really though of in and around Munich that won't take us too far away from the city.

Some stuff I roughly planned already:
- Walking tour
- Marienplatz
- Christmas Tram
- X-Mas Markets (of course)
- Nymphenburger Palace (which I understand has skating/sledding this time of year)

Any other MUST DOs? Last time we really used Munich as a jumping off point and didn't spend a ton of time in Munich proper, so kind of want to do it justice this time. :)

Thank you all!!

The Residenz was a little overwhelming for me. However, the colocated Schatzkammer (Treasury) was small and highly interesting. It had a separate entrance and fee. The Wittelsbach ruling family were real magpies, attracted to all that glitters. Their treasures were pretty spectacular. Though, it does make one wonder why they were not deposed earlier.

You might enjoy the Alte Pinakothek and other museums in the Kunstareal. Several historical churches are within walking distance of the Marienplatz. Beer and sausage at the Hofbrauhaus. Dachau is a memorable if somber experience. If you will have a car and are going southwest on a day trip the Wieskirche is spectacularly beautiful and doesn't take a lot of time.

Heads up. They are now cancelling many of the Munich Christmas markets. Check to see if the ones you want to visit are still taking place. It all can change over the next few days.
