10 days in Bavaria area from 2/17-2/27

Hi!
I am going to visit a friend in Nürnberg in 2 weeks for 10 days. It is my second time visiting Germany but the first time in Bavaria.

Do you have any recommendations for me not to miss?
I plan to visit towns (Bamberg!) around Nürnberg by car, spend a couple of days in Munich, maybe visit Frankfurt and castles around the area, and take trains to visit Harz and Selke valley. I also want to try saunas but not sure about the safety due to Covid.

My friend is German but I do want to have some ideas to ease his anxiety for having to host and entertain me in February when it is rather “dreadful” (his word), weather wise.

Thank you in advance!

"I plan to visit towns (Bamberg!) around Nürnberg by car..."

Driving into/around big cities like Munich and Frankfurt is generally a lot more problematic and costly than taking the train.

There's a day pass for visiting towns around Nuremberg - the VGN Tagesticket Plus - that will get you to Bamberg by direct train in about 50 minutes and back for about €22 round trip. And your German friend can travel with you for free. It's the same price to other towns within the VGN zone - Rothenburg, Bad Windsheim, Amberg, Bayreuth, and others.

You can day trip even further to other Bavarian towns - Regensburg, Munich, and Würzburg, for example - on the Bayern Ticket day pass.

You can buy these passes at Nuremberg's main station from a ticket machine.

Würzburg is not far from Nürnberg and will make a good day trip. The Prince Bishop's Residence is not to be missed. Especially the small chapel on one end of the main structure. Between there and Frankfurt is a town called Messpellbrum. It has a small fairy tale castle complete with moat and has been in the same family for five or six hundred years. Google those two places to get an idea of what you'll see there.

One unique thing you might consider when the weather is dreadful is a visit to one of the sledding areas that has a ski lift (Rodelbahn). I'm not sure what is available around Nürnberg but my go location was always Wallburg down in the foothills of the Alps.

A cable car takes you to the top of the mountain and it is a 6.5 km long run back down. There is a small hut about halfway down you can stop for food/drinks and warm up. Something you can only do in the winter.
