1 Oct - 10 Oct Itinerary HELP =]

Hello fellow traveler's!!!!!

My wife and I have been preparing for this Euro-trip for awhile and have most of the backbone sorted. We are now just trying to tie all the loose ends up and get some opinions. The time we are looking for some thoughts fall from 1 Oct - 9 Oct. We arrive in Munich on the 1st, having a hotel already booked from the 1st checking out on the 6th. We planned to hit Oktoberfest 2 times during that time frame and a mix of exploring Munich and surrounding areas (Day trip or closer) the days between trips to the Wiesn!

  • Any ideas on day trips from Munich or days to go to Die Wiesn?!?
  • How much can we get into using Munich as "homebase"

The second issue we ran into..... We check out of the hotel in Munich the morning of the 6th and we don't know what we should do with out remaining time. Our return flight to the US departs London Heathrow at 11 am on the 10th. We have bounced around ideas of staying in Germany but sliding over towards the Black Forest and or Rhine valley, as well as hitting another area outside of Germany (Netherlands, Austria, Italy)??? I think with our short remaining time it would be best to pick a "homebase" and stick to it with maybe a day trip, rather than heaps of packing and stress the last days of our trip.

  • Should we stay in Germany and see more of the area or try to get a quick trip somewhere else?

Additionally, Since we have to get back to London for a flight on the 10th, is there somewhere we could be close to catch a flight to London EARLY on the 10th (0600-0700).

Current Planned Itinerary
Dublin ---> Munich arriving 1 Oct @ 0940
Hotel in Munich : 1 Oct checking out 6 Oct
Return flight to USA from London Heathrow @ 1100

Any help is GREATLY appreciated, Any questions that i can answer to help please feel free to ask! =]

Cheers,
Travis, 28

Wife & I hit "Die Wiesn" last year and had a blast.

Days at "Die Wiesn" -

  • Ans: We went without any reservations on Sunday afternoon (super busy), and then Monday 12noon (super light). We were able to find seats both times, although Monday was much, much easier. Generally during the weekday afternoons you can certainly check out 2-3 different tents without a reservation. By 5:00 each day you will need to give up your free seat to the next reservations. Our favorite tent was Augustiner, followed closely by Paulaner & Hacker-Pshorr. Check 'em all out and prepare to meet all kinds of different people.

Munich as "homebase"-

  • Ans: Munich is the place to be, even though hotel prices are jacked-up. The vibe of the town is fantastic. Explore the Viktualienmarkt for it's open market. Englischer Garten is a nice getaway from the crowds.

Day trips -

  • Ans: We headed out to Andechs Monastery (45 min train ride) and spent an afternoon visiting the monastery and the views are definitely a wonderful activity. Enjoying a beer or two along with supper at Andechs will just round out an already fun experience. This is Bavaria at its best.

I'd recommend to take a train to Salzburg and spend 3 nights. Loads of stuff to do in/around there. I believe there's a direct 2 hr flight from Salzburg to London.

If you don't have Bavarian Trachten (Lederhosen & Dirndl), make sure to buy some in Munich before heading to Wiesn'.

Prost!

Hi Travis- Just a few comments.

1. You might like this info on the 'Fest. http://www.oktoberfest-insider.com/ Depending on your likes and dislikes, visiting the 'Fest 2 out of 6 days may not be enough.
2. As brewin suggested, Salzberg would be a good place to spend Oct 6-9. But I would NEVER try to catch an "early" flight to LHR on Oct 10 to catch an 11 AM flight to the US. You need to be standing in the security line @ LHR by 8 AM. Go the afternoon before and spend the night of 9 Oct close to LHR.
3. Now personally I would catch a noonish train from Munich to PARIS on Oct 6 and spend the nights of Oct 6, 7, and 8 in PARIS. Then I would catch a noonish Eurostar to London and get a hotel close to LHR for the night of the 9th.

I have a similar itinerary for a week earlier, only I plan on 4 (or maybe 5) nights out of 5 @ the 'Fest, (some days just 2-3 hours), then train to Paris for 3 nights, then flight to US from CDG.

Have a great trip and I'll save you a few biers !!!

The advantage of staying in Salzburg over Paris is that the 140€ Lederhosen that you purchased in Munich can also be continued to be worn without an awkward glance from the local citizens ... well except my wife wasn’t as captivated by the idea
