Hi all,
My wife and I will be stopping in Warnemunde/Rostock for a cruise in early September this year on a Sunday. Looking at our options and wanted to get feedback. The cruise excursions to Berlin are full and we are only in port from 8a-5p so not too practical to do it ourselves with only 3ish hours in Berlin. Wasn’t able to find to much to see in Warnemunde/Rostock. Didn’t know if we should rent a car and drive to Wismar or Lubeck. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Look at toursbylocals.com. They have guides for cruise excursions. They give you prices up front and will work with you for sights. We have used them in Dublin, Amsterdam, split, Havana, Edinburgh just to name a few places. We have a cruise booked for next May. As soon as our cruise pops up, I’ll look for guides to book through this website. PS - We did a tour of Rostock. It is a cute little town just a quick train ride away.
I would spend the day in Warnemünde/Rostock and relax. Many other tourists doing this can't go wrong.
Warnemünde is an old fishing village and it is worth visiting. Stroll through Alexandrinenstrasse and imagine what it was like when the fishermen lived and worked there. There is also a small museum you could visit.
Enjoy a fish sandwich from one of the cutters on the old river (Alter Strom).
Climb up the lighthouse and enjoy the view - you can easily miss out the ugly Neptun Hotel (a relic from the GDR).
Walk along the mole to the port entrance and simply enjoy the view of the incoming ships for a while.
And it shouldn't be unmentioned that Warnemünde has the widest sandy beach on the German Baltic Sea coast. Maybe you just want to spend a day at the beach and enjoy the sand?
There is also the possibility to book a harbor tour including Rostock and Warnemünde. Rostock port is a huge operating seaport.
You can take the S-Bahn from Warnemünde to Rostock and visit the city center with a guide.
It can be also nice day when you spend it also in the center of Rostock, with monuments as the old building of the university. Bad Doberan and Wismar mentioned by you (road 105 to West) or Greifswald, Wolgast and Stralsund (motorway 20 to East) are also a good places for enthusiasts of history. Other places important in regional history (including Pomerania) are among others Schwerin, Waren, Demmin, Burg Stargard near Neubrandenburg, Usedom (town on Usedom island), Anklam, Ueckermünde, Löcknitz and Police, Szczecin, Kamień Pomorski, Wolin (town on Wolin island), Stargard, Pyrzyce and Cedynia on Polish side of the border. In my opinion Lübeck or Szczecin shoud be for longer time than one day.
