We have toured King Ludwig's castles on two different trips. Each time, we stayed in Schwangau at the Hotel Weinbauer. Schwangau is about 2 kms from Hohenschwangau, about as far away as Fussen is. BUT, Schwangau is much smaller and less touristy that Fussen, and MUCH cheaper than Hohenschwangau. The Hotel Weinbauer is a great hotel, with big rooms, a huge buffet breakfast, and NOT all the traffic, hustle and bustle of Fussen. The hotel offers free WiFi, althoyugh when we stayed there it was pretty weak, and free parking.
