Several years ago we stayed at Hotel Gruener Baum and were very pleased. Immaculately clean, comfortable room, friendly staff and great breakfast.

A brand new Motel One is opening the end of July. Our new favorite hotel chain. Around 100 euro.

We stayed at the Hotel Alter Kranen and really enjoyed it back in 2014. There is a pizza place very close to the hotel right along the river that was very good. I don' know if this is one of the Rick Steve's recommended hotels you mention in your question.
