Pastoral lodging near Neuschwanstein and Zugspitze

We are looking for a smaller hotel in a more pastoral setting when visiting both King Ludwig castles and Zugspitze over a two day period. I'd like this stop on our trip to be a "catch our breath" point where we can just take in the beauty of the mountains and dairy farms. Any suggestions? We are looking for something with reasonable access to both spots and will be travelling north to Rothenberg following our stay in this area. We are a family of four - including two teens.
