Munich Lodging & Plans

I am flying into Munich the end of July to meet my niece. I plan to head to a hotel, BB or inn from the airport, deposit my bags and then walk to a Sandeman's Tour at Mary's Column, Marienplatz. (I am guessing I will have to take a cab in because I will have luggage.) I would like lodging within walking distance to the tour and to Hotel Kempinski, where we will be picked up for a multi-day river cruise a couple of days later. (Hotel Kempinski is pricey for our two nights, so I am looking for alternatives--charming, funky, but safe works for us.) Any thoughts would be appreciated. Neither of us have ever been to Germany before.

S-bahn is easy to use in Munich, goes from the airport to downtown safely and efficiently. How much luggage will you be hauling for the river cruise ?
We have twice stayed at Hotel Brecherspitze which is a few stops out from Marienplatz -- clean, inexpensive, great breakfasts, in a non-touristy area.

I am sorry to hear you won't get to stay at Hotel Kempinski. We love that hotel.

We stayed at the Hotel am Viktualinmarkt last Dec. for the Christmas Market time. It was very reasonable, clean, friendly staff and good breakfast. Very convenient to Marienplatz. RS recommends and so do the Kerns!

We stayed at Pension Lindner, the Rick Steves' recommended pension less than 3 minutes from Marienplatz, and would happily stay there again!

Thanks for your replies. Coming from the airport I will have one larger suitcase on wheels and a smaller carry on. Would that be manageable on the train? Also, I've been told all the signs at the train are in German and English. Is that correct?

I will check out all the lodging options. (The Hotel Kempinski looks lovely, but my niece is adamant about paying her way & that would be too much for her budget.)

Thanks again.

It was for me. I had a 24 inch checked bag and a carry on, and had no undue difficulty.

We will be taking a train from Innsbruck to Munich on Oct 2. We are flying out Oct 5. We are thinking about 2 nights in town and 1 night near airport. We will have some luggage after a 2.5 week trip. Suggestions as to where to stay? Thanks
