Munich hotel; early flight out

We are finishing a lengthy European trip with four nights in Munich. Our flight out (MUC to LHR to SFO) departs MUC at 7:25 am on a Saturday in June 2025.

In reading the forum posts here, we find many excellent hotel recommendations for hotels in the downtown Munich area, and a few posts recommending the Gastoff Maisberger hotel in Neufahrn.

We tend to be airline compliant, arriving at international airports three hours before our flights. I know, I know; we always end up with 2.5 hours to kill in the airport. But this is our first time through MUC.

Some posts say how easy and convenient the S-Bahn is, and how the S1 line goes straight to the airport. The S-Bahn website says it runs all night on weekends. Does that mean if we stayed in a downtown hotel, we could board the S1 at 4:00 am? And how long is the S1 trip to MUC?

Alternatively, if we stayed at the Gastoff Maisberger (to be nearer the airport), or even the airport Hilton (to be at the airport), how long is the S1 ride into MUC? While "easy and convenient," is it worth being that far removed from downtown, for four nights?

We appreciate all thoughts. :-)

Pretty timely. My wife and I were at the Maisberger 3 days ago. We moved from near downtown Munich to the Maisberger to be closer to the airport and also to be closer to Freising (so as to tour the Weihenstephen brewery). Some info:

  1. Nice hotel, good meal at the restaurant. Very nice room (447). Cost was E 217 for 2 nights. Nice breakfast buffet.

  2. We were on the 4th (5th in US) floor, and appreciated the elevator. There were two, but the one by the hotel lobby didn't work, no guess on when it would be fixed. The one in front, by the restaurant, worked fine. BUT there was a sign "Due to Laws, the elevators will not operate at night" What? They said the elevator would not run until 6:30 AM. So we had to walk down 5 flights with our luggage at 4:20 AM. Wasn't as bad as we expected.

  3. Very short walk to the station, track 1 was right there. Kiosk was open for coffee. Our train to MUC took 10 minutes, with only one short stop in between. Could be 15 minutes sometimes. Train mostly empty at 4:30 AM.

  4. I'd suggest going to the Maisberger for your last night. Not much to see in Neufahrn, but we were winding down from a 24 day vacation, and just wanted a nice meal there.

  5. Check-in time was 1:00 PM, and we left our previous Munich hotel at 10:00 AM, so we had to leave our bags at the hotel, wander around town a while, then have a nice meal before checking in.

I really enjoy the Gasthoff Maisberger. Directly next to the S1 station. A family run German hotel with reasonable rates. Both elevators worked while I was there. Our rooms were quite large by European Standards. We enjoyed walking around the small town and felt like we had left the tourist zone and entered an area far more typical.

Time to downtown Munich 20-30 minutes. Time to airport 5-10. We stayed for 4 nights and did not find that the travel time bothered us in anyway. My son and his wife liked it so much that they stayed there again on their next trip.

Hi jhg655,

I'd be sure to check the MVV app to see what times the S1 departs Neufahrn near the time you want to leave. I just did a quick check for this coming Saturday and some of the early times require taking a bus too which might not be so pleasant in the middle of the night. Of course, it's quite possible in late June there will be many more trips scheduled at the time you need to travel. You will need to be sure the illuminated sign on the S1 car you board has and illuminated plane and "Flughafen" on it as there are some cars that go on to Freising. The seemed confusing to me but the signage is very good and it was no problem at all.

There is a bit of a walk at the airport station to the checking area, maybe 15 minutes, but the signage is quite good and easy to follow. There are luggage carts available at no charge.

Our room at the Maisburger was very large as was the bathroom. We really enjoyed the spaciousness those last couple evenings. The food in the restaurant was tasty too. There didn't seem to be much to do in the town itself but the people we ran into there were very friendly.

We are also a couple (well I am) who likes to follow the rules and I always arrive much earlier than recommended. Things can go wrong and sometimes they have. One time years ago the service that was to take us to the airport arrived at our home on time. However the driver locked his keys in the vehicle with the engine running. We had to jump in my car, drive across town, which included waiting for a long train on the way, so he could pick up a spare set of keys. And drive back to my home. No train on the trip back. We used all our extra time!

Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful trip.
