Mainz Hotels - Altstadt

Looking for hotel recommendations in Mainz Altstadt. I'm a solo senior female, 2 - 3 nights next week. My last-minute search is dictated by a medical mission, so I realize it may be difficult to find vacancy.
Thanks!

Hi lgpoodle, longtime lurker here - if you want something close to the University hospital I can recommend Hotel Am Römerwall. It is decidedly not in the Altstadt, but is very convenient for medical matters. We once stayed there and there were many guests from the hospital, and they are quite used to people recovering from operations. However, although you can walk into Mainz from there, it and the hospital are uphill from the Altstadt at the end of a long day. There are a few other useful sites around; a Novotel and a couple of restaurants, and if you are lucky you can request a kitchenette in one of the rooms. It is not too far from the station but with bags I would catch a cab.

If you just want a hotel in the Altstadt for sightseeing purposes I can recommend the Hilton. If you are on a budget, the hotels around the station are all OK.

Hello lavandula!
Thank you for the suggestions. Fortunately, I'm not a patient. I'm only going to be at the hospital for a brief pickup of medical products. I'll have a day and a half or so, to explore, so I ended up booking at the Mercure City Center.
With much appreciation for the detailed information!

Oh, glad you found somewhere! Well, perhaps the name of this hotel can be of use to someone else. I had to be close to the University so we had a few days here. It was a nice hotel.

Enjoy the Mercure!

I may need to stay closer at a future date, so your suggestions are very much appreciated!
That's what I love about Rick's travel forum - you can't offer too much info. It's helpful to someone at sometime in their travels!
Many thanks!

I've always stayed at a hotel near the Mainz Hbf. Makes it easy to get to the airport by S-Bahn in the morning. There are three hotels right across the Bahnhofplatz from the Hbf - Hammer, Königshof, and Schottenhof. I've stayed at the last two several times; always had a good experience.

Is it really worth it to be close to the Hbf? I am looking at Mainz hotels, because we will be leaving out of Frankfurt and I didn't want to chance it coming from Oberwesel too early on flight day. I don't like making connections in a hurry, especially with 3 kids! The station area looks pretty glum, and I would always prefer to stay in the old town, if even for a few hours. There's always taxis, right?
