Lunch in Cologne

We will be in Cologne mid-April and looking for lunch time restaurant recommendations. We will be near the cathedral. We will eat just about anything.

You may view it as the most touristy choice, but the big dining room is actually quite attractive, and the food fine: Brand-name Kolsch bierhaus closest to the cathedral, Brauhaus FRÜH am Dom. On pedestrian square, in the corner I think. Be sure to visit the connecting small room where the kegs are tapped, gravity only, an poured into 0.2 liter (very small) glasses.

If you follow Rick's rule to walk two blocks away from the crowd, Brauhaus Sion and Peters Brauhaus have a little more atmosphere, and I think Sion has potato pancakes on Thursdays (??) Long time since my last visit.

Keule. Short walk from the Dom. My husband still raves about the pork knuckle there. He would go back to Cologne just to eat there.

If you're looking for something special, I ate lunch at Maibeck für Dich, which is a Michelin starred restaurant and where I had the best meal of my entire month-long visit to Germany. It wasn't overly expensive, either, and I highly recommend it. https://www.maibeck-fuerdich.de/

Another good restaurant also nearby serving traditional German food is Brauhaus früh am Dom. I had dinner there but they are open for lunch, and the food was very good. I ordered sauerbraten and loved it! Good beer, too. https://www.frueh-am-dom.de/brauhaus.html

ETA: I just realized that Tim also recommended Brauhaus früh am Dom. It really was a good meal there.
