Lunch at Weltenburg Abbey

Yesterday, I had a mostly excellent lunch at the restaurant inside of Weltenburg Abby. The abbey is located on the Danube near the village of Weltenburg, not far from Kelheim and Regensburg. I took the day cruise from Kelheim and you can also reach there by car, bike or hiking.
My lunch was a chicken breast in a chantrelle mushroom cream sauce, potatoes stuffing in fillo dough and mixed vegetables. The chicken and stuffing were excellent. The veggies were previously frozen and I would preferred fresh. I did not have dessert but if was clear from other dinners around me that their desserts were fantastic.
Weltenberg is a Trappist monestary that has been brewing beer since 1050. I had their Dunkel, Anno 1050 Marzen and Helles. All were excellent. You can dinner either inside or out in the beer garden. Interesting was to spend the day if you are visiting the area.

you've encouraged me to add that to my Regensburg / Nuremberg / Passau circuit. Great location with undoubtedly great views. Looks like a real winner.

The boat looks like a relatively short trip for €20 round trip. Did you think that the views and experience were good value for money?

Did you prefer the restaurant over the beer garden? I'd usually go for beer garden under the trees.

Nigel,
Boat trip is a tourist activity. Like the short river or harbor cruises found in many cities around the world. When I go back to Weltenburg I will not repeat the cruise.
It was a bit cool and a little damp when I visited. Inside was the better choice.

@jkh
The Benedictines there would probably not be too happy to hear that, given how proud they are of being the oldest Benedictine abbey in Germany (supposedly founded in 617, although reliable records only date back to the 8th century). Hopefully you also visited the monastery church designed by the Asam brothers, which, alongside the Asam Church in Munich, is surely the best example of a genuine Bavarian Baroque architecture that is no longer dependent on Italian models.

Curiously, I was also in Weltenburg yesterday at lunchtime. We struggled to find a place in the beer garden.

It's not as spectacular as, say, the trip from Villers-le-Lac to the Saut de Doubs, but it's still very impressive. Alternatively, you can walk upstream from the landing stage in Kelheim on the left bank of the Danube (approx. 5 km), but at the end you have to climb over high rocks, from which you have an excellent view of the abbey. Alternativly, you can have a Zille (a small boat typical of the Danube) pick you up before the climb (information available from the tourist office in Kelheim, [email protected], Tel.: 09441 701-234).
