In June 2015, my adult son and I spent two nights at Gästehouse Rothenburg, a 16th century building with a brand new interior, all white and wood with colorful accents, impeccably and simply decorated, scrupulously clean, with warm touches like plants and little vases of flowers. We were welcomed by friendly Gunnar, who was pleased that I spoke some German, and although he speaks very good English, was very patient, encouraging, and helpful as I did my best auf Deutsch. He gave us great recommendations for several walks in and around the city, important sights, and great (reasonably priced) restaurants, where we enjoyed excellent German dinners. Gunnar and Ines prepared breakfast for us each morning with many delicious choices. Gästehaus Rothenburg is a very comfortable and happy place to stay.
We spent one morning taking a walk in the countryside. Gunnar kindly drew the route on a map for a picturesque two-hour walk outside of the town walls. Exiting the Klingentor Gate of the town wall, we set out along the Tauber River, gazing at rolling hills, forests, small villages, native wildflowers, and an alpaca farm. On our way back into town, we even walked through a lovely hillside vineyard. Thanks to Gunnar, we experienced a view of Rothenburg that few tourists see. It was important to Gunnar that our time in Rothenburg was the best it could possibly be, and that is perhaps a host's greatest attribute. We give Gästehaus Rothenburg our highest recommendation!
