Freiburg Dining

Hello Everyone,

My wife and I will soon be on a Rhine River Cruise (December) and we will be choosing an excursion to Freiburg, Germany as opposed to Colmar as we will be staying in Colmar for 4 nights prior to the cruise. We apparently will have a full day, almost 9 hours to explore. We are looking for good (not Michelin) restaurants for all meals......breakfast, lunch and dinner. Would any of you world travelers have some suggestions? I looked at the previous suggestions for Freiburg in the RS travel forum but most are over 12 years old.
Thank you,
Scott

Hi. My mother is from this area and, unfortunately, I don’t have dining recommendations as we generally are hosted by family. If you had more time, I’d suggest getting yourself to a “broom” restaurant in nearby Spatburgunder (Pinot noir) wine country, where I’ve enjoyed some great dinners. What I can recommend is catching either breakfast or lunch at the Münstermarkt, assuming you’re not there on Sunday when the market isn’t offered. There are stands and carts with delicious sausages and other local specialities - and, the Münster is pretty special to visit.

Most of the places are pretty hearty German fare, been to Freiburg twice, my "go-tos" are: (though beer was a focus of the trip, so mainly brewery related)

Martinsbrau, a small brewery with a dining hall. Nice selection of regional specialties, beer is very good.

On the square with the cathedral is Ganter Brauereiausschank, good seating outside, cozy inside, again good regional fare, affiliated with the Ganter brewery.

Hausbrauerei Feierling Biergarten is a nice beer garden with decent selections for lunch or a snack. There is a more formal restaurant of theirs just across the street.

If you go for a walk/hike up on the Schlossberg (the large hill above the city) then at one end is the Kastaniengarten, a nice beer garden, with snacks or lunch, and nice views of the city. You can also access it from a walkway and elevator from central Freiburg.

Absolutely agree with the Ganter recommendation above- we loved it so much we ate there twice, and brought a beer glass home. Lovely setting and great food.

Thank you redheadlibraian, Paul and Cat VH for the suggestions. While my wife and I are decidedly not beer drinkers, we may give it a go while in Germany and we may be pleasantly surprised. After all..when in Rome!

Thanks for the suggestions!!!

My son and I ducked into this place because it was very near our hotel. It was warm and cozy. We were there during the Xmas market, so we ate mostly from the market stalls. They also make wine in Germany. I don't normally care for still white wine, but I find it pairs better with that hearty German food than beer, especially if I want to remain upright after the meal. Have a great time.
