Cochem Recommendations this fall

We are spending two nights in Cochem 19 OCT 19 to 21 OCT 19 this fall for our 40th anniversary and would like a recommendation on where to stay. Have looked at the previous thread from 2018. Appears some of the hotels are booked that weekend and one for over $250 a night! A river view would be nice but not a must and we will have a vehicle. Any insight would be great.

We stayed one night in Cochem prior to the RS G.A.S. tour in 2017. Following the suggestions in Ricks guidebook we chose Pension Gundert (info@pension‐gundert.de). It is a few blocks from the river and the center of town. We were very happy with our choice and would stay there again. There was no AC though a fan was provided and that was enough. At the time we stayed, the price for the night of 8/28/17 was 44 Euro per person including breakfast.

The whole Mosel Valley is a popular weekend destination for people from the Netherlands. I do not see any particular big events on the calendar for that weekend,

If you are looking for someplace very special, near Cochem, memorable for an anniversary trip, have a look at the Alte Muhle https://www.thomashoereth.de. They have a winery and a very special restaurant. It's in a village in the hills above the Mosel. You would need a car. We used to take friends there for special occasion dinners and finally got to stay there on a trip a couple of years ago. Not a budget kind of place, but one of the most beautiful small hotels I've found in Germany.

I strongly recommend Bernkastle rather than Cochem. We've been up/down the Mosel 5 times & Bernkastle is the star of the show. We only stopped in Cochem on 2 river cruises. When we were driving on our own, we wouldn't waste time there. Trier also beats Cochem.
