Munich is a very large city so depending on where you're staying, a "best" (always subjective) could be some distance away.
Staying at Bavaria Boutique Hotel on the West End, on the Northwest side of the Oktoberfest grounds, we had two very good Italian meals at Taormina. It's not a fancy place but cozy and pleasant, and yummy enough the first time to go back again. I probably had one of the best pizzas in my life there.

We liked Wirtshaus zur Brez’n for German food. It's on Leopoldstr. 72 in Schwabing neighborhood of Munich. You can take a bus or underground train there pretty easily.
We enjoyed Haxnbauer for traditional German food such as pork knuckle and they are located near the Marienplatz.
Spatenhaus an der Oper is a good reliable choice for upmarket local food.
Not sure about Italian, but if you go to any of the major beer halls, the food is good German, all the main dishes, all consistently good. I would however at least one morning (mid-morning) go to Schneider Brauhaus ( Tal 7, 80331 München, Germany) for a big pot of weisswurst and a hefeweissen beer with Pretzels, the perfect start to a day. I would also spend lunches at the Viktual Markt, just browsing the stalls and picking up a picnic lunch to have at the tables in the beer garden.
For Italian, Vinaiolo in Haidhausen is one of the best in the city. The four course dinner is about 55€ per person. If you are looking for something cheaper the set lunch menu is 35€ or less. Reservations are recommended for dinner, especially on the weekends.

Thank you everyone! We are staying at the Charles hotel which I believe is in between the Mariepletz (sp?)and the train station. I always love Italian when I just need to not think about what I like. Had great Italian food in Paris last summer.
I asked this same question a few years ago and was recommended Brenner for great Italian food. We went there for our anniversary and really enjoyed it. It isn't too far from where you're staying.
I've eaten several times at the Hofbräu Haus and enjoyed it. It's pretty much traditional Bavarian food, plus they have traditional Bavarian entertainment and great bier. I think a lot of people who pan it don't really like Bavarian food. I little more upscale, but still traditional, would be the Ratskeller (basement of Rathaus) or Zum Augustiner, near Stachus on Neuhauser Straße.
Lol, I love Bavarian food but the Hofbräuhaus is a tourist trap with mediocre, overpriced food.
For slightly upscale Bavarian food in the center, Andescher am Dom is great. I had the best blood sausage of my life here.
For a beer hall, the Augustiner Brewery, which is a few blocks behind the train station, has the best Bavarian food I've had, hands down. I've never had a schweinhaxe come close to theirs.
Their biergarten on the other side of the train tracks is great too but the food obviously isn't as good, but still good for a biergarten.
