Berlin to Munich

Hello. We have 6 days to see Berlin and other areas of the countryside on our way to Munich late March 2025, to catch a riverboat down the Danube. Looking for places to visit and stay. We will be taking the train. Look forward to any recommendations. TIA Jane

Six days total isn't too many if you want to see a lot of Berlin. However, if you want another experience before Munich you could visit Dresden or Prague or Rothenburg ob der Tauber on the way to Munich.

You should post this in the Germany section and not the review section to get more feedback.

I would suggest making a stop in Dresden for a few nights. You could visit Leipzig while you are there, or there are other possibilities. Here is a thread with some suggestions. https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/germany/day-trips-from-dresden

Nuremberg would also be a good place for the second stop, as you could base yourself there, and visit some of the surrounding towns like Bamberg, Regensburg, and Wurzburg. These towns are wonderful and all worth a visit. Rothenburg ob der Tauber would take a bit more maneuvering but is doable.

All of the above are easily reachable by public transportation.

I just realized that you have six days total. I agree with Threadwear that you could easily spend 6 days in Berlin. I would suggest at least 4-5 nights and then make a stop in either Dresden or possibly Nuremberg on the way to Munich for the final 2-3 nights.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am going to look into them. I do want to spend some time in Munich as well since we’ve never been there. I have also, I hope, reposted this in the Germany section of the Travel forum as suggested. Thanks for your time and thoughtfulness. Jane

We were somewhat disappointed when traveling to Berlin. We took in the normal travel sites, but Museum Island was just not that good. We were also disappointed in the choice of restaurants around the train station where we were staying. Seemed to have American fast foods, deli restaurants or Vietnamese restaurants.

We took the 2 hour train ride to Dresden where some of our relatives were from before 1938. The town was absolutely beautiful and the museums were world class. We stayed right off the big plaza in a great hotel at a great price. And the area had restaurants owned by all the big German breweries. We actually found good German food there.

We do intend to return to Saxony to tour the mountainous countryside.
