Altfraenkische Weinstube in Rothenburg

Stayed in this hotel in the early part of Dec 2015. My wife and I found this hotel in a 600 year old building to be quite quaint. It was also very clean and had a very good breakfast. It was close to the town square. Although the preceding sounds very nice we both found this hotel to be very unacceptable. The owners were cold and very un-welcoming. They seemed to be bothered by our stay. The worst part of the stay was upon checkout. The owner would not accept my credit card. They said it it would not imprint. I'm not sure who they were trying to fool here but no one uses an imprint machine in Europe in 2015. My card also had a pin and chip which has been in use in Europe for many years. I had to come up with my payment in cash at 8AM. There are many good places in Rothenburg but in my opinion this is not one of them and Mr. Steves should consider removing them from his book. I would never stay here again based on the very poor attitude and poor practices of the owners.

Gosh, that's a shame. Friendly and welcoming staff can make or break a hotel and can compensate for any deficiencies that a hotel might have. We were there around the same time this year and stayed at the Hotel Markusturm which is close to the center of town. The staff at that hotel couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming. And the restaurant at the hotel was so good we had dinner there both nights. Thanks for the heads up on this hotel for those who might consider staying there in the future.

We have been there twice and our experiences could not have been more different than yours. The owner was very friendly and we had an excellent stay. I do not know what happened in your case but based on our experience and the reviews on Booking.com and TripAdvisor, your are very definitely filing a minority report.

Sorry to hear that Jim. A few years ago, we found the owners to be the rudest people in Germany. I guess some things don't change.
