European travel at home

So a couple weeks ago it was three years from my trip to England Paris and the South of France.

In an effort to “relive that” I “recreated “ a day on the trip. On one day on the trip Dad and I took a drive along the coast of France through Monaco into Italy where we walked along the coast of a town named Ventimiglia and stopped and had a pizza.

So we drove over to the coast of Lake St Clair walked along the shore in a park then drove home stopping at a small Italian market named Ventimiglia. Then we drove to a good Italian restaurant that sells great pizza . It was not quite the same as being in France and Italy and we didn’t drive through Monaco but it was fun.

We did watch Formula 1 practice that day.

What a great idea. We live near a few ethnic areas. Would be a good idea to drive over, park, walk around, do a little shopping, and eat some good food. I’m going to suggest this to my husband, not like we have a Full calendar.

I know you are transitioning to travel without Dad, so being able to recreate some of your past travel with him still riding as co-pilot is wonderful.
There are many places in North America with European names. Maybe some are close enough to do day trips to. See if you can replicate something you would do if you were in the European town.

What a lovely idea! I am sure it was a wonderful way to remember a special trip.

What a wonderful idea, Doug, and I bet you and your dad enjoyed that very much.

I am sure everyone has something near them that would fit the bill. Heck even in northeastern Oklahoma you could go down to “Little Italy” in Krebs and get some good sausage; or to Tulsa to see European artworks and beautiful gardens at Philbrook.

Whether you agree with relocating historical buildings or not, the buildings are here and it is another way to "visit" Europe.

The Cloisters, New York City

A Sir Christopher Wren Church in Missouri

More on the Wren Church

A section of the Berlin Wall nearby

A part of a cloister in Kansas City

A French chapel in Milwaukee

A summary of the many European buildings in the US, with additional major buildings in Miami and Virginia.

Additional list with a California project and other portions in museums (Toledo, Detroit, Philadelphia, Worcester MA)

A possible "European" trip could string together the Milwaukee Chapel, the Wren Church and Berlin Wall segment in Fulton Missouri, with the great European art collections in Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City.

My next trip will be to a “German” town about an hour and a quarter drive from home. Mostly we will go to the Christmas store (need a new tree topper as I broke ours last year taking it down...and it is for a large tree).
