I always like to ask for favorite restaurants/experiences just prior to going on a trip.
We will be in Annecy from June 25 - June 28 (3 nights)
We will be in Chamonix from June 28 - June 30 (2 nights)
We will be four adults (one with bad knees, so gentle hikes would be best)
We will have an apartment and plan to eat in or prepare great picnics to take out
We DO like to eat out and taste local specialties; however, we hate to leave a restaurant feeling like it was NOT worth the money.
ANY suggestions for your favorite eateries and experiences are appreciated!
In Annecy there is a boat tour of the lake that we found quite enjoyable. There is also a large park where you can (or could) have a picnic. Lots of shops in the market area to pick up take away food for the meal.
In Chamonix, take the cable car up to Aiguille du Midi. Fantastic views. For easy hiking there is a path / trail that runs alongside the river that is basically all flat. We had a really good meal at La Caleche, but that was several years ago so you might want to check some recent reviews.
We will be in Annecy & Chamonix just before you. The Marathon du Mont Blanc will be taking place June 27-30. For meals in Chamonix I highly recommend La Maison Carrier at the Hameau Albert 1er. I had one of the absolutely best meals of my life here last summer. The ambiance, service, and food are outstanding. Our whole experience at the hotel last summer was probably the highlight of our trip to France.
In Chamonix I also recommend Akashon (located in the Helipoic hotel)
We did a lot of hiking while in Chamonix. We didn't take the cable car due to the price. The local train (Mont Blanc Express) is free for guests. Make sure to ask your host for a guest card. You can visit all the little towns along the line. The previous poster mentioned the trail along the river - very nice! There are other gentle hikes in the area. I also HIGHLY suggest visiting Parc Merlet. I know you said you have bad knees - they do have parking closer to the entrance for people with disabilities and there's a shuttle from Les Houches. Parc Merlet is an animal park - you can walk amongst the wildlife (just don't get too close). The views of the mountains and the valley below will leave you speechless.
We only visited Annecy for 2 hours last year. We're going back for two nights this year. It was a such a beautiful lake to see in person. Wish I had more info to share on it! Enjoy your trip :)
Thank you OP for posting the question and for the helpful replies so far. We will be staying in a town just 30-40 minutes from both cities in July. I have marked the Sunday Annecy market for a visit.
