Would you suggest the Brittany Region or the French Riviera (Nice area in particular)?

Hello everyone,

Trying to finalize my itinerary for my trip to France.

I cannot decide whether or not to do the Brittany Region (staying in Rochefort-en-Terre), or...staying in Nice, and doing day trips to Eze, Grasse & Monaco while staying in Nice. I do realize they are vastly different areas. I'm not particularly interested in Nice, but I am very interested in the surrounding towns. Seems like Nice is a good place to base myself out of. I will also be staying in Avignon (Provence) for 2-3 days, so I don't know if I can easily access those towns from Avignon, instead of Nice (particularly Eze, Grasse & possibly Moustiers).

I tend to love small, quaint, charming, beautiful towns (as opposed to big cities). Here is the list of other places I plan to go to so far:

Paris
Dijon (most likely staying in Beaune)
Strasbourg (most likely staying in Colmar, possibly Annecy)
Avignon

Should I do both Nice and Rochefort-en-Terre, or is this too much? I would stay 2 days in each.

Thank you!

If you have no interest in Nice (I like it there, it has plenty of attractions) why stay there?

It is so very easy and enjoyable to stay in a nearby town.

We really like Beaulieu sur Mer, just a couple of train stops from Nice.

Villefranche sur Mer is between the two, and very very nice.

Monaco is special.

Or stay up in the hills.

I don't know about Brittany. I've only been in by about 30 km (from Normandy) so can't comment, but I go to the Cote d'Azur most years.

Since you love small, quaint, charming, beautiful towns, I think your choice should be Brittany; however, you don't say how long you plan to travel in France or whether you will have a car. Brittany is a long way from the other places you are visiting, so I would suggest you save it for another trip when you can combine it with Normandy and the Loire Valley. If you prefer small towns to larger cities, why not stay in a smaller town rather than in Nice? Your itinerary is quite ambitious, so I hope you have at least three weeks.

Thank you both! We will be traveling by train only. Sounds like Nice is the way to go, but to stay in smaller towns instead.

When? What month? That can make all the difference in the world: crowds, traffic, weather.

Yes, you can access Moustiers from Avignon but not Grasse or Eze easily.

I'm going in mid-October for 2 weeks. I will be spending 3 days in Paris, 2 in the Burgundy region, 2 in the Strasbourg area, 2 in Avignon. Just deciding between Brittany and Nice for the other 2 days. Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks

Very ambitious plans! My two cents would be to take those two days and divide them among Paris/Burgundy or Strasbourg.

Before you decide to spend only 2 days each in so many far-flung regions, double-check how long the distances between them are. I would definitely cut at least one region, allowing you more time to enjoy what you actually do see.

If you're not renting a car, choose the Riviera over Brittany, as the bus and train system on the Riviera is very comprehensive and inexpensive.

I agree with Marie that you should add those two days to the areas already planned. Two days for Brittany isn't enough. It's a good part of the day to get from Paris to Rochefort-en-Terre and just as long to get back. The scenery on the four-lane road to get there isn't terribly scenic. Normally I'm an avocate for Brittany, but in your case it doesn't woek.

Thanks for the advice! I've been to Paris before, so I think 3 days will be enough for me. Although, it might be nice to have an extra day in Paris to do a day trip to Giverney or Chartres. I'm used to doing 2 week long guided tours where they pack in as many places in those 2 weeks. So, I thought I'd try to do something similar. I've always liked seeing many places, as opposed to staying in one spot for a longer time. But, maybe I should follow this advice and slow it down!

When you say two days do you mean three nights( which gives you two full days) or do you mean two nights, giving yourself only one full day?

Travel each day takes up sightseeing time.

Having only been to Paris once before I can't imagine you couldn't find dozens of things you haven't done yet!

End of October can be rainy in all places listed.

Yes, if you're only spending two nights in each of those places, I'd add on a day or two to one of the places you're already going, rather than add on an additional part of the country.

And Annecy is a bit remote for seeing Strasbourg!!!
