I'm planning to head to Lyon for the women's world cup final in Lyon. I don't have tickets, but am hoping to watch on some jumbo tron at the olympic park with a picnic and bask in the fun and energy with my family anyway. Does anyone have idea's, knowledge, experience on doing this. Assuming this will happen but not sure about security and anything else.
This may not directly answer your question, but 3 years ago we were in Lyon, and there was some huge World Cup-type tournament happening somewhere else in the world, but they’d set up a huge “Fanzone” in Place Bellecour, right downtown, with a huge Jumbotron screen (maybe more than one?) and thumping music and mobs of people.
Frankly, we avoided it, but for fans, that’s where the action was. Since this event is going to actually be in Lyon, the situation may be organized and sited differently, but Lyon makes a big deal out of accommodating sports fans. Hope you can get details to maximize your experience!
I'm confident there will be a Fan Zone in Lyon. We went to the Men's World Cup in 2006 in Germany, and there was a fanzone in every major city, usually in a prominent gathering place -- park or square, with giant tvs (including one set up on pontoons in the middle of the river in Frankfurt). We also went to the Women's WC Quarterfinals and Semis in 2015 in Canada. I don't remember seeing this because we had tickets, but the FIFA site says they had them in every host city (https://www.fifa.com/womensworldcup/news/fans-invited-to-celebrate-fifa-women-s-world-cup-canada-2015-at-dedica-2607096). France has a very good team, so I would expect there to be a lot of excitement and energy all around France during that time (more if they are in the Final, but we found that the excitement from the other teams' fans was really wonderful in every city we traveled to). Even if there is not an official fanzone, I'm sure there will be plenty of bar/cafes showing it with folks spilling out into the street.
We are in France for Women’s World Cup matches also. We were told there are no big fan zones due to fears of terrorism attack. There is a Facebook group you might check out - Americans Connecting Abroad- Women’s World Cup, where people are selling tickets and announcing gatherings to view matches.
