My husband and I are going to be in Amboise this Sept. Does anyone have any recommendations for wineries/vineyards that are not to be missed?
My wife and I enjoyed the tasting at Domaine de la Chevalerie , which is near Chinon. The family has owned this vineyard for many generations, and the wine is excellent. Call first to let them know you are coming.
A wine-oriented driving tour would follow this route, this tour starts at Tours but once you follow it on the map, you'll be able to modify it to start and end at Amboise, if you prefer:
Starting at Tour
east to Vouvray
staying north of the river, continue to Mesland
turn right and cross the river there, coming to Chaumont-sur-Loire
continue southwest to Amboise
continue southwest to Montlouis-sur-Loire
then south to Esvre
southwest to Sache
southwest to Chinon
northwest to Savigny (you're still south of the river)
north, cross the river, then to Bourgueil
northeast to Langeais
continue to Cinq-Mars-La-Pile
continue northeast to Luynes
then finish by continuing back to Tours.
To maximize your enjoyment, you may want to buy a book, French Wines by Robert Joseph is a good one, it's part of the DK series, and it's where I found the above tour.
Thanks so much for the recommendations! I can taste those wonderful wines already!!
I'll second T's recommendation for Domaine de la Chevalerie; we visited them 2 years ago and tasted about 10 of their wines. Plus, their ancient underground cellars are amazing. They're in Ingrand, just outside Bourgueil.
