Wineries in Provence

Hello. Heading to Provence and want to do a bit of wine tasting (sparkling rose). Any must try wineries you recommend, ideally with a restaurant where we could enjoy lunch. We are staying in St. Remy. Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

I would recommend finding a half day or full day tour that will take you around. We just returned from this area and found the best way to visit wineries was through a tour. We did Northern Rhone and Burgundy.

I'm not familiar with sparkling rose. Are you thinking cremant?

In St Remy there are a few wine shops that probably also have some tasting.

You might want to consult the Lewin Guide "Wines of Provence". Benjamin Lewin has written a number of guides to wine regions in France, each of which explains about the wine growing areas in the region, discusses some of the finer points of wines typical to the region, profiles the leading estates and gives some tips for visiting in the region. I find the books useful as they are aimed at those who are interested in wine, not wine professionals so the information is useful and not over my head. The largest section in each book is the profiles of the estates which includes details such as whether each winery offers tastings or sells wine and contact information etc. I've enjoyed reading about the estates and their histories even though we have never visited a winery in France despite having cycled by dozens and dozens.

Luberon valley has some great ones and close to Chateauneuf du pape. Also Bandol. Those would be my top areas.

There are several wineries in St. Remy itself (including Domaine Milan, Terres Blanches, and Hauvette), some of which are w/in walking distance of the center. If you have a car, there are wineries scattered in all directions (we had a car during one stay and no car another time, and visited a number of wineries each time). If you will have a car, I'd do some research and find some wineries to visit, and do it on your own, rather than with a tour. I've visited hundreds of wineries in France and never done one with an organized tour.

Rick's Provence book includes a suggested Cote du Rhone "wine route". We used it as a rough guide, starting in the village of Gigondas, about an hour's drive from St. Remy. (Can't speak to whether sparkling rose' will be featured in the region. This link might help: https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/read/articles/wines-of-provence.) We did a "tasting" at a shop in Gigonda; I don't think it was affiliated with a single winery. There are probably others. Rick's proposed route (a loop) is a beautiful drive. We enjoyed lunch in Gigondas at a restaurant named Nez, also a wine bar. Their website: http://www.nez-gigondas.com/ Domaine de Coyeux winery, on Rick's route, was particularly enjoyable....the drive up to the mountain-side winery is worth the effort.

Chateauneuf du Pape produces the best wine in the region (but I think it's mostly reds). If you're going for wine, that's the place to visit.

My favorite roses, right now, are from Languedoc area, southwest of Provence.

For Sparkling wines, Champagne area is the place to visit.

Have to agree that the best sparklers are in Champagne! We tasted all over Provence and nothing compares. It seems to me that every Champagne house had a rose' champagne and of course you know out of that region they will be "sparkling" wines

That's a little far to go from Provence. There's some very good wine being made in Provence, but not sparkling wine.
