My husband and I will be in Lyon end of May and wanting to do a winery tour, tastings, etc. Is this possible to do on one’s own , renting a car for the day or best to do by group tour or other means?
Winery tours are better when somebody else is driving, since DUI thresholds are low (lower than in the USA), and it would be a shame to spit most of the wine you taste.
I have no experience regarding Beaujolais or northern Côtes du Rhône (e.g. Condrieu) tours from Lyon though, so I will let others chime in
Lyon is not really a wine growing area, though it is located close to Beaujolais and (a bit further away) the Rhône wine growing area.
Depending on your interests, and assuming you'd prefer tours in English, here are some suggestions from the Office du Tourisme et des Congrès du Grand Lyon.
I made a guess at your date. You can adjust if needed. The first two are in the Beaujolais (north of Lyon) whereas the third (Côte-Rôtie) is in the Rhône wine growing area south of Lyon.
If you understand French there are many more options.
