Wine tasting in Montpellier

Hello helpful community!

My husband and I would like to take a wine tour in the region around Montpellier in early September. We hope to be introduced to smaller wineries, if possible. We are looking for a small group or semi-private tasting and touring experience. We will be staying in town and will not have a car.

Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions!

My son enjoyed Bertrand Bosc's tour. We learned about it from visiting friends who took it a few year's earlier. Note that they all enjoy wine but are not serious tasters. On the other hand, Bertrand Bosc may be able to tailor a tour for you that spends more time in more small, different wineries.

I'm sure you've already looked at the Office of Tourism's listings: https://www.montpellier-tourisme.fr/decouvrir/vins-et-gastronomie/oenotourisme-et-vignobles/ The Faugères region has some very good wines.

Although not a wine tour, but a general tour to outstanding sites in the back country, we know several people who have taken this one. I tried to accompany a couple, but the tours were filled each time. https://www.wisud.com/fr/produits/excursion-saint-guilhem

The Montpellier region is one of the largest in France in terms of wineries, with over 1,000 estates. But small wineries aren't generally included on organized tours. They have other things to do.

I also suggest considering Montpellier's wine merchants (caviste in French).
Some of them organize tastings. Not only is it a great way to experience wine tasting in a friendly atmosphere, but you'll also be able to taste excellent wines from small producers that you wouldn't have access to on an organized tour.

Some places in Montpellier;

Pousse Pas Mémé dans la Vigne (Don't Push Grandma in the Vineyard) . They speak English

La Cave des Arceaux (free tasting on Saturdays)

Maybe Elizabeth visits one from time to time.

Avoid the "Nicolas" stores; the vendors could just as easily sell washing machines as wine.

  • For the record, "Don't Push Grandma in the Vineyard" is a wine-related adaptation of an old French expression, which meant "don't exaggerate."

I've been out to some vineyards with a local group, but thanks for the listings JoLui.
I sometimes go to a tasting at a quality store in the mall near me on Saturdays, just one vineyard a week, or I pick wine up at a local shop that does do tastings for a charge, on Boulevard de l'Aéroport next to the Jacques Coeur covered market at the Léon Blum tram stop. I have no idea what he offers as I've never done a tasting there.
I can ask for more info on local group page.
