I will be staying in Amboise with my non-drinking teenager. I'd like to do some wine tasting anyway, but don't want to invest in a whole day or even half day tour that would be boring for him. I'm thinking I'd like to just arrange a visit or two on my own. I'll have a car, but ideally it is either cab distance (as I'll be drinking, even if not a lot) or in a town that we can have lunch and walk around in after, I guess. Probably prefer a cab though. Anyway, was thinking Vouvray, but looking for specific recommendations and can be anywhere that is reasonably close to Amboise. Merci!
Amboise itself?

Getting a cab may not be as easy as you think. Amboise is only a small town, and those who require car transport usually own one.
Our usual wine visit is Montdomain, but that's an hour walk from Amboise.
Hi there -- there is a spot I love a little ways down the river from Amboise (and the town is on the same side of the river as the bulk of Amboise) called Montlouis -sur-Loire. A winemaker I really love has a small shop there, and I have gone a few times (three times if I remember correctly).for tastings.
You could probably bicycle there easily. Last time I took the train which is a little silly as I think the train goes a bit out of the way to get there, but it worked for me.
Here is their website

The Montlouis wines are just the other side of the river from Vouvray. They aren't as well known but I think they are soooooo good.
(I looked it up - Montlouis is 13 km or 8 miles from Amboise, a straight shot along the river, and the Cave de l'Insolite is right on the road that runs along the Loire that connects the two towns.)
We're doing one in Amboise, too, on June 10 at Caves Ambacia. http://www.caves-ambacia.fr/ My sister and her husband did a wine tasting there a couple of years ago and spoke highly of it.
Sorry for my belated reply, but thanks all. I booked the tour at Caves Ambacia, which sounds perfect, and may stop by the other places. This really hits the spot: I don't need to worry about driving, it won't dominate an entire day, but I won't totally miss out on the wine in the region. Merci!
