Wine tasting, and canoeing, around Sarlat

Four of us planning to spend a week plus in Sarlat. Looking forward to visiting local wineries for tasting. Any recommendations? Would also like to spend an afternoon canoeing on the Dordogne, anyone have experience / recommendations with this activity?

I'm sure there are wine tasting opportunities in the Dordogne but from all my research and visiting the area (once) I can't recall it being mentioned as a highlight of the area. I'd include wine tasting with eating the local foods which the area is known for. There is so much to do and see that I wouldn't spend my time wine tasting and save it for wine centric places.
Canoeing the Dordogne is more like a day at the beach rather than a sightseeing cruise. People stop along the way to swim and lay out and make a day of it. Rick looks silly in the video with long pants and I'm sure he just paddled out enough to get the shot and didn't travel down the river. As was everything in the Dordogne, canoeing led to amazing views but also swans, otters, nature, Medieval and Renaissance architecture... all while floating down the river.

The sweet wines of Saussignac and Monbazillac are worth trying, if you like that type of wine. I believe It's 1 to 1 1/2 hours west of Sarlat. In the same direction, a little closer, are the Pecharmant wines, which can be quite good. We spent a week in the Sarlat area (Beynac) this Spring, and visited a Cahors producer. Again, it's a little bit of a drive, but there are lots of good Cahors producers.

The RS France Guide Book has a lot of detailed information about canoeing the Dordogne. We've paddled a section of the Dordogne and it is a very scenic way to spend a day or part of a day. By and large it is a flat water paddle, but there is enough current so you can enjoy the trip and not work yourself to death to get to your destination. There are a number of outfitters located at various places (see the book) so you can tailor the length of the trip to the time available.

We've floated the Dordogne a couple of times. It's a grea,t low-stress trip. We used Copeyre Canoes. We met the van at their office right on the river in the center of Beynac, and then they drove us up to the put-in point near Vitrac. I can't remember how long the trips took, but it was great fun. The scenery is superb. A lot of people stop on the sandbars to swim or picnic. Some people pull up in La Roque for lunch.

Thanks to all of you for your responses. Great to be communicating with people that have done this trip and gain from your experiences.

We just took a canoe trip last week. We used the company in the RS book and canoed from Vitriac to Beynac.

It was a beautiful afternoon. It should be noted that we stopped at La Roque and again for a quick riverside lunch. We did spend about 4 hours so you may want to plan your time accordingly.
