Looking for suggestions for a week stay in the wine region of Bordeaux. Will fly into Paris and rent a car. Is it possible to stay in one place and take day trips. Have heard that August is not a good time to visit with wineries closed for vacations. I drink the Rick Steve’s cool-aide and I’m not sold on a river cruise. Thank you in advance for suggestions. I heard that the Rick Steves France does not cover this area in depth. Cheers.
You raise a good point about August. If you can travel during shoulder season you'll probably enjoy it more -- especially in the fall, as harvest season is really lovely for any wine region.
I don't know of any particular place to stay, but here's some geographic info tailored to wine. Maybe you can choose a town/village that is centrally enough located to serve as your base for the week. http://winefolly.com/tutorial/superieur-cheap-bordeaux-wine/
We did this 2 years ago in June. Not over crowded but lots of people.
3 to 4 nights in Bordeaux. Once or twice a day you can strike out to the appelation regions surrounding Bordeaux such as Pualiac, St St Estpehe,, Graves, Blaye, Margaux , Cadilac and Sauterne for the Bordeaux grapes.. Then spend 2 or 3 days in St Emilion an beautiful little village and from there strike out to bergeac , less than an hour and another day south to Cahors to try the original Malbec grape wine which is less than 2 hours away. Many many vineyards to stop and taste at along the way.
Bon Voyage
Delay until September. August is a horrible time to go for wine.
