We are going to France with our GPS Garmin unit. Have European maps. Just want to be sure that the 12V cigarette lighter connector (used to power the unit) that comes with the Garmin unit will plug into the Avis VW rental car. Will it work or do we need an adapter for a European car's cigarette lighter?

Mine worked, yours should. The GPS was Magellan, the car a Ford, but it's all standardized.

In a word, "YES". The wiring in European cars is the same. I also have a Garmin Nüvi and it's always worked just fine in Europe.
The connectors are the same. But several posts here warn that you should check that the cigarette lighter is working, before you leave the rental car lot.
