I’m helping a friend who has never been. I’ve only stayed in the 4th and Montmartre. I think it would be easier for her to be able to just walk out of her hotel and go to sites rather than learning the metro. If so, which Arrondisement is the best? I’ve read the 6th is nice as it’s within walking distance to major sites but has old world charm, too. What do you think?
I stayed in the St. Germain area when I was there, which is a really lovely area in the 6th Arrondissement, and thought it was a wonderful location. I was there with two of my grandkids and we stayed at the Hotel Left Bank. The streets were lined with trees and flowers, and people were sitting in cafes, walking around and riding bikes. It was a very colorful scene. The hotel itself was very nice with a vintage vibe to it. The breakfast was an additional cost, but when I booked the hotel, they were offering it for €5 pp, so we got breakfast both mornings, and it was quite good. There were not only breads and pastries, but creamy scrambled eggs, crisp sausage links, fruit, cereal, yogurt, and tomatoes and cucumbers.
The location was outstanding. We loved this area, and it was so convenient to sights, cafes, boulangeries, pastry shops and much more. We were about a 10-minute walk from Notre Dame, a 15-minute walk to the Louvre, and a very short walk to the Pont Neuf where we caught the sunrise cruise along the Seine. Luxembourg Garden was a short 5-minute walk away as well. It really was a very convenient location. Plus, the Odeon Metro station was just a block away. It really couldn't have been more convenient to see everything.
I would recommend the Marais area on the right bank, also close to the Hotel De Ville & Notre Dame. There are buses that go right down Rue de Rivoli to the Louvre area, too. The neighborhood has so many restaurants and I enjoy just walking around in this older area. And, I agree with Mardee, the St. Germain area is also lovely and flat for walking
