I've seen several iconic photos of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle above the Dordogne, with Chateau de Beynac in the distance. Can anyone tell me where it was taken from, e.g. the highway or specific location?
Looks like it might have been taken from the hillside south of the town, looking northwest past the castle to Beynac in the distance across the river. Google Earth shows a steep wooded hill in about the right place, with a switchback dead-end road, but no information about the road, which leads me to think it's private. The photo could also be from the air, perhaps one of the balloons in the area.
Are you going there, or just curious?
We are planning to visit the Dordogne area next spring, and have been sampling photos of the region to set up an itinerary. I noodled on Google Earth a bit trying to find the viewpoint without success, and will try following your comments. You may be right about the balloon... Thanks for your assistance, Dick.
This B&B in Beynac is a short walk uphill, with views across the river that include several castles. Also comfortable rooms, excellent breakfasts, charming hosts, and parking.
It looks lovely, and very reasonable--especially with breakfast included. It could be an ideal place to start and end our Beaux Villages loop. Thanks again!
