Where to stay near Bordeaux en route to the Dordogne?

We're planning to take the train to Bordeaux in early June en route to Sarlat in the Dordogne. We arrive late afternoon.

Anyone have recommendations about where to stay in Bordeaux - or should we pick up our car and stay somewhere along the route to the Dordogne?

Since it's not an overly long drive to Sarlat, I'd suggest staying in Bordeaux and getting your car the next morning. We've always stayed at Hotel des Voyageurs in Bordeaux. It's a very modest place, but very nice and clean. Although it's on the "wrong" side of the river, you can easily walk across the bridge to the center, and there's a tram stop just outside the hotel.

We stayed at La Maison du Lierre (http://www.hotel-maisondulierre-bordeaux.com/) when we spent the night in Bordeaux doing the reverse of your plans - dropping off our rental car after a few days in Sarlat, then taking the train back to Paris. We found the hotel to be charming and comfortable, and really enjoyed our night in Bordeaux. The area by the river is beautiful at night.
