My husband and I are planning a trip to France in late April-early May that includes three nights in Provence. We plan to see Avignon, Arles, Les Baux, at least one Luberon town, and the Cote du Rhone wine road. We plan to stay either in Avignon at Hotel d'Europe or in St. Remy at at LeChateau des Alpilles. We will be taking the train into Avignon from Nice and we do not want to rent a car. We plan to rely on tours to explore the region. Will one hotel location be more convenient for what we want to do? For those who may have stayed at either/both hotels, is one more highly recommended than the other? Thank you!
tpasja,
As much as I prefer St Remy de Provence, without a car it would be best to stay in Avignon, Arles or Aix-en-Provence to find opportunities for tours of where you want to go. I don't know anything about either hotel, so can't advise you there. Definitely stay in one place if you only have three nights. Search the forum for comments about day trips from the "A" cities listed above. Several contributors have discussed their experiences with them. Bon Voyage!
We have stayed twice at Mas de l'Oulivié in Les Baux and loved it. Hotel feels very Provence with the lavender gardens. You can easily walk up to Les Baux. They also have bikes you can use to explore the surrounding areas. For tour guides, I highly recommend Christopher of Oohh Provence. We used him in 2022 and 2024 and loved our private tours with him. He has a wide variety of tours that he does. I spent the entire day with him touring Van Gogh sites, Aries, monasteries, Roman ruins and St. Remy. We covered a lot but I never felt rushed. It was also nice that Christopher did all the driving.
