We were planning to stay in Montpellier for easy access to the Camargue. Not sure anymore because of seeing posts about it being the 2nd most dangerous city in France. Does anyone know if this is true? If all is ok, do you recommend a part of town to stay in. We take all the suggested precautions: money belts, bags close, guard up if someone trying to be a distraction. Thank you!
We stayed for two night in May 2022 and it never occurred to me it was dangerous. We even stayed near the train station and Place Comedies at Hotel d’Aragon. I remember it being clean with a pleasant staff and an easy location. We walked pretty much everywhere. I know longer have the book but so assume I got the recommendation from Rick Steves.
We stayed there for a week and lived to tell the tale including walking out at night; wish I'd known it was such a terrifying place so I could have quaked in fear. We stayed at an apartment hotel which had very good transport access and a fair number of dining options nearby including a market where we could stock the kitchen. The place had a nice outdoor space and the breakfast room had hot drinks all day. The tram was right outside the entry and the market across the street. It was an easy walk to a large modern shopping center or one stop on the tram.
It was the Citadines Antigone. We walked to the river and many local sites and took the tram a few stops to the historic center. We like having two rooms and kitchen facilities when we travel; if we wanted a simple hotel room, we probably would have booked in the historic center but we liked having the outdoor patio and apartment facilities..
2nd! Wow. I looked up "ville la plus dangereuse en France" and found Lille, Bordeaux, Grenoble, Lyon, le Mont Saint Michel, but not little old Montpellier. All in the eyes of the beholder. Mont Saint Michel--really. LOL
Could you share a link to the information. It's news to me.
Nîmes is more convenient to the Camargue than Montpellier. Aigues-Mortes is even better and has a wonderful boat trip into the Camargue with a stop for lunch, gypsie-kings' style music and a horse and bull show at a manade (bull ranch) through Companie des Bateaux d'Aigues-Mortes. It's at www.croisiere-de-camargue.com. The all day croisière repas en camargue is my favorite. Sorry, I can't get the paste to work. The west side of the Rhône is called la petite camargue.
The east side of the delta is la camargue. It's more accessible from Arles. Chico and his family (from the Gypsie Kings) has a dinner theater there.
Montpellier hotels: Citadines as Janet suggested, little old Hotel du Palais in a beautiful setting, Hotel Belaroia beautiful new hotel near the train station, 5-star Hotel Richier de belleval, and more Mercures, Ibis, Courtyard by Marriott and so on. There's plenty to see and do in MPL.
Montpellier is one of the French people's favorite cities.
As a result, it is experiencing a housing crisis with high housing prices due to strong demand. The approximately 70,000 young people pursuing higher education are struggling to find accommodation.
The most dangerous aspects of life in Montpellier are:
Very hot summers with occasional heatwaves, which have become increasingly common over the years,
Despite the proximity of beautiful beaches swimming pool vendors raise their prices unreasonably.
The consumption of oysters from the Thau Lagoon after flooding.
The Tramontane wind when a branch falls from a tree while you are walking underneath.
Foreign tourists who rent cars and do not respect the traffic laws.
In 2022 we stayed at https://www.hoteldupalais-montpellier.fr/?lang=en. Elizabeth recommended it and we enjoyed the hotel and the location. We were able to walk everywhere. I would happily stay there again.
