where to stay in Bordeaux

My husband and I are planning to stay in Bordeaux for 5 nights in October (hopefully we'll be allowed into France due to the pandemic).
Since we plan to travel by train (we'll have no car), can you suggest which section of Bordeaux is the best area to stay in in order to experience what there is to see in Bordeaux, either by walking or using local transportation?
Can you also suggest which hotels are reasonably priced and recommended?
Thank you for your input!

Are you flying into Bordeaux or arriving by train from another destination ? I stayed by the train station and pretty much walked and used the tram to get around. It is not that big. The wine museum, the cathedral, and the market near it are all the highlights there I found. I have been two times. Trains to the Dordogne area and south to the Basque area terminate in Bordeaux.

We stayed a lovely Air BnB in the Chartrons neighbourhood. It is away from the tourist area but everything is easily accessible with the trams. We enjoyed the neighbourhood. Lots of restaurants and bars. A good grocery. A small wine museum. A beautiful big church. Close to the riverfront. And right around the corner is a Velib stand to rent/borrow bikes. We joined the bike commuters quite often on the promenade to get to the big covered market. There was also a small open air market ,on Sunday I think ,on the promenade. I can find contact info if you are interested. The place we were in slept four comfortably, but our hostess had other places in the area.

The 3 times we've stayed in Bordeaux we've stayed at the Hotel des Voyageurs: https://www.hotel-voyageurs-bordeaux.com/en
It's simple but clean, and although it's on the "wrong" side of the river, it's very convenient to everything by tram or walking (there's a tram stop right across the street, and it's right by the bridge over the river.. And it's a very quiet area.

For a central location, close to many attractions, I would recommend Hôtel de 4 Soeurs.
Not Fancy. Not High end. But good, centrally located, and reasonably priced.

My friend and I stayed at Hôtel Le Chantry in 2019. They were very accommodating. I had mail delivered there:) About a 20 minute walk to the river.
