Where to stay in Aix-en-Provence

We will be in Aix-en-Provence for three nights in May. I have been researching 2* hotels in Rick Steves' guidebook on Tripadvisor and am torn. I like the character of the arches of Hotel le Manoir, but it doesn't have consistent reviews. Hotel Saint Christophe seems more modern and perhaps not as charming, but it has free wifi, an elevator and better reviews. Grand Hotel Negre Coste's reviews aren't that great either, but it apparently has a friendly and helpful staff. Has anyone stayed at these hotels or can suggest a better choice? Thank you!

Barbara, I have stayed with different family members several times at le Manoir and absolutely love it because of the history, the personality. It certainly met our needs but keep in mind that if it's hot (and May 2014 is expected to be), they don't have AC. Last May we stayed at the Negre Coste and definitely appreciated the AC and the overall comfort; we just missed the ambiance of le Manoir! We have also stayed--but not since 2003--at the Quatre Dauphins which also has AC (no lift) and liked it; but once we found le Manoir, we've stayed there until last year. (I felt having AC was a more important for my husband last year.) The breakfasts were excellent at Negre Coste, very good at Quatre Dauphins (in 2003) and adequate at le Manoir. Hope this helps.

Barbara,

For the past 4 years we have stayed at Hotel Des Augustins and absolutely love it! It is in a great location and all the rooms are air conditioned.

Here is the link: http://hotel-augustins.com/en/

On the website it states: "The Hotel des Augustins welcomes you in the ancient Convent of the Augustins Chapel. This outstanding landmark was built in the 15th century and is now a classified historic monument."

Hope this helps,

Sue
