Where to stay: 9th or 14th arrondissement

I’ll be visiting Paris with my 70 year old mother in May for 10 days. We have the opportunity to stay in the 9th near Rue des Martyrs/Rue Victor Masse or in the 14th near the Pernety metro. Which location would easier for getting around Paris via walking, metro and bus for my mother? She does not have mobility issues per se, but she is 70 so tires easier than me. I have been to Paris many times; this is my mother’s second trip. Thank you!

Rue Victor Massé / rue des Martyrs is walkable (within 3/4 miles) to Montmarte, to the Opéra, to the Grands Boulevards. There are lots of cafés and restaurants in the immediate area too. It is a hilly area (rue des Martyrs is fairly steep), but a 70 yo without specific mobility issues should manage it without problems.

Pernety is a pleasant area in itself, but isn't walkable to any particular sight except the Catacombes.

I would take the 9th!

14th: The Niepce Hotel (by Hilton) is very nice
19th: My most favorite hotel in Paris is the Hotel Saint-Petersbourg. So French. So beautiful. Around the corner from the Opera and the Grands Magasins.

We loved our stay (in the 5th arr) in the little Familia Hotel, 11 Rue des Écoles, 75005 Paris. Very close to the Seine, not too far from Ile-de-la-Cite, etc.

Rue des Martyrs is a wonderful food street which even has a book written about it by Elaine Sciolino. I would choose it.

Claire, Thankyou for the book recommendation. We are staying close to Rue des Martyrs for our upcoming trip. We are staying at the Alba Opera Hotel. They have been very responsive to all my planning inquires. Sound like there are good restaurants and several accessible bus lines not too far from the hotel. The hotel has an elevator and several rooms with showers. We do not plan to take the metro, just accessible buses and trams.
