Hi, need help deciding where to go from Paris. Scenery is a must as are historical old villages.
Want to end up in Colmar and then on to Strazburg before Germany. Would appreciate some ideas.
We are trying to do it by public transport but are willing to hire a car if needs must to see more.
We leave Paris on 5th June and maybe want to spend five or six days getting to Strazburg any suggestions would be appreciated
For "historical old villages" anywhere you'll probably need a car. If they have good train connections, they're not villages any more. And local buses can be slow and inconvenient. But a train can get you within striking distance. For instance:
Reims is an easy train ride from Paris, in the direction you want, with a great cathedral, Roman gate, champagne caves and tasting rooms. Farther east is Verdun, site of one of the worst battles of the First World War.
If you want to drop further south you could take a train from Paris to Dijon and get yourselves into Burgundy, full of old villages and historic sites like Alise-Ste-Reine, where Julius Caesar clinched his conquest of Gaul a few centuries ago.
Between colmar and strasbourg are many historical villages but you will need a car. Rs guidebk gives the routing and village names. As an alternate the area around Beaune is very picturesque with villages to visit. I have done both but with a car. Bothnare simple to get to and drive and so fun to visit.
Some ideas for places to stop if you follow this route ...
Beaune >> Lyon >> Annecy >> Lausanne >> Bern >> Colmar >> Strasbourg
