We’re in Aix en Provence for a month, without a car. Please share your favorite places to dine, both lunch and dinner. We’ll have time to check them out! Thanks.
I was in Aix-en-Provence long ago. Aix has a great Tourist site with lots of info. Aix now has Communter Trains and Fast trains that can get you to many places such as Marsailles in minutes. Aix is known for Culture, Art and Food. You will have many choices. Most Bistros and Cafes have their Menues posted on the doorway or online. My only advice is to avoid major tourist areas when you want to eat and don't order the Prix Fixe. Bon Voyage!
I’m so jealous of your month in Aix. The longest time I was based there for was two weeks, and I came to absolutely love it. I don’t know if this is your first time or how you came to settle on Aix, but I hope you feel about it as I do.
Probably you should avoid the cafes on the Cours Mirabeau for food, although they are essential for cafe sitting and watching the world go by with un verre or un café. As for restaurants, I haven’t been to Aix since 2019 (the pandemic and then mobility issues have kept me from European travel since then), so there probably have been many changes. But one place I can recommend that’s still there is L’Incontournable, at the tiny but delightful place des Trois Ormeaux. In the evening they set up tables in the place, so you can dine al fresco. We’ve been there a number of times and always were happy.
Les Caves Henri IV, in the rue Espariat, is rather pricey, but we thought it was absolutely great. It’s in a wine cellar that dates from the fifteenth century, so has lots of atmosphere, but also excellent food.
A fun place is Chez Jo, in the rue Espariat. It’s basically a pizza and Italian food place, but it’s in a tiny little place near La Rotonde and has been there forever. The area is very lively, the food is good enough, and the people watching is great. I still have the wine bottle from our last visit on my kitchen counter, and it still brings back great memories.
We really liked Mille Feuilles too, but that seems to be gone, alas.
Aix is built for strolling and for la dolce vita, if I may. Enjoy it!
