Where/how would you spend six nights after seeing Paris and before visiting Chamonix in late August?

Hi,
Would love some ideas for a family of four (boys 10 and 12).
We had orginally planned for Provence (Luberon region perhaps) but have decided against it - too far, too crowded, could be too hot?.
Have now been thinking Alsace region, basing in perhaps Colmar but am wondering if that's too much time there.
But what about splitting this time into two spots, say Avallon area then onto Colmar? Maybe that's too much driving/train travel?
After seeing Paris, we want smaller town/countryside experiences with good history before our time in Chamonix.
Thanks All!

In Alsace, the Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg would be good, then Monkey Mountain where you can interact with a large colony of Barbary apes (they are small monkeys). Colmar is a big town. Stay in one of the nearby villages instead. With 6 nights, you could first spend 2 nights in Strasbourg (fast train from Paris), then rent a car.

The city of Reims is an interesting city much closer to Paris than the Alsace region. Then you can drive through champagne country to Avallon. From here, it’s an easy drive to visit Guedelon Castle. A 13th century castle is being re-created using original materials and building methods. Not only is there the castle but there are also authentic buildings for the supporting trades involved in the construction. It’s off the beaten path in Treigny in Burgundy but for your sons it would a terrific visit. Then you could drive to Beaune and onward through Annecy to Chamonix. (Avoid traveling through Switzerland so you won’t have to buy a vignette for your car.)

Thanks Chani and Philip.
Others have opinions on Alsace vs. Burgundy/Avallon regions?
I don't think we want more time in large cities after seeing Paris.
Thank you All!
