Wheelchair rental in Paris

Greetings,
I'm going to Paris with my mom and looking for a place to rent a wheelchair. Does anyone have any suggestions? I tried Sage travel and the pricing was outrageously expensive not to mention they gave me three different quotes in one phone call.

Also is taking a chair on a train a nightmare? Along with luggage?

Thanks
Cj

We travel with a wheelchair, bringing one from home. It is much cheaper than renting one. We have had no trouble getting it onto and off of trains. My husband has figured out a way to hook one suitcase on the back and bungee cord the second bag underneath the chair. But we have also just rolled one of the suitcases along behing the chair. Airlines let you gate check the wheelchair- you just drop it off and pick it up at the door into the plane. Just tell the gate staff and they'll give you a ticket for the chair. The chair makes it much easier to navigate big airports. By the way, buses in Paris are much easier with a wheelchair than the metro or RER trains.

If by train you mean the long-haul trains, SNCF has a Disability Access Service department that can help. They take a long time to reply but you could e-mail them to obtain assistance with boarding trains. If you mean the metro, I agree with the response above. Other than Metro Line 14, the metro system is not configured for wheel chair use. Most stations lack elevators and making connections between train lines often calls for elevation changes that are done via stairs. The RER is a little better with more stations with elevators but not all do and sometimes the elevator is well hidden in the station. If you decide that you want to rent a wheelchair in Paris, the Paris tourist board maintains a list of businesses that rent them: http://en.parisinfo.com/practical-paris/visiting-paris-with-a-disability/info/guides/practical-information-for-disabled-visitors/equipment-hire-for-disabled-visitors/rental-of-medical-equipment-including-wheelchairs. In addition to that list, often large pharmacies also rent wheelchairs. If you are staying at a hotel, your concierge may be able to direct you to one nearby. Pharmacie Paris-Charonne on Rue Charonne in the 11th rents wheelchairs but I do not know if it is convenient for you.
