The heat wave will reduce possibilities right now, but check at the Office of Tourism at Place de la Comédie. It’s behind the plant and flower vendors. They have a lot of info.
Summer on the roof of the Corum opens at 18h. Eng speaking meet up at 10 Thursdays cafe de la mer. I can post more later.
Edit: here's more that I've posted at another time.
the whole Centre Historique. Take a look at the Salle Pétraque on the Place Pétraque. The medieval building and the others next to it are amazing.
There are about 180 old mansions from the boom days (wine export and center of regional government)...followed by bust days when the vines died due to phylloxera.

Look at all the plazas: those used to have churches until they were destroyed in either the religious wars or the Revolution, Now they have restaurants and cafés. (Jean Jaurès, Marché aux fleurs, etc)

Walk along the Lez from Antigone to the Marché du Lez to see amazing modern architecture.

Best toy store in France: Pomme de Reinette et Pomme d'Api http://tradition-jouet.com/
Street art is everywhere.

Go to the primitive art museum: Musée d'art brut
Fine arts: Musée Fabre
Sahara Museum
Street Art Museum Parcelle 473

Contemporary art: MOCO and eat in its restaurant, Fawn

Gardens: Jardin des plantes founded to provide plants to the medical school

Old medical school building, oldest continuously in operation medical school in the world. Nostradamus was a student in Montpellier.

Excellent trip into the back country:https://www.wisud.com/fr/produits/excursion-saint-guilhem
Arbre Blanc for cocktail after 4 pm. Watch the sunset at 10 pm
Fawn Restaurant int he garden at MoCo contemporary art
Aigües Mortes and La Camargue day trips, go to the beach 10 kilometers away
Sahara museum
Brocante/ antiques market at the Place du Peyrou on Sunday mornings
Nimes: 20 minutes by train for Roman museum and ruins

We loved getting drinks at sunset here:

Really beautiful view and lovely cocktail.

We used Montpellier as a base to also visit Carcassonne for the day for lunch on our anniversary

I had always wanted to visit Carcassonne as we had seen it perched on the hill so many times when driving north from the coast -- it was a perfect day trip.

And we took a small van tour to villages, hikes and abbey in the region as we don't drive anymore in Europe.
This was an A+ tour -- could not have been more perfect. We booked through Get your Guide and it was fine -- I could not figure out the direct contact for the vendor but it is always better to do that if you can:

There were 3 other couples and it was very well organized. We all brought our own picnic lunches and had lunch at a table with table cloth and chairs LOL beside an interesting lake. The abbey is the one that had half of its cloisters moved to NYC for the 'Cloisters' museum there.

It is also easy to visit Sette, Nimes and Pont du Gard and Arles as day trips from here.

We enjoyed walking around Montpellier and we had friends there whom we visited for dinner and such. While it is a pleasant town we didn't find that much to do in Montpellier itself but then we didn't look that hard as we knew what we wanted to do. The historic center is interesting and on some days there are free walking tours but we didn't do that -- I found a walking tour map on line and we did that.

I agree Nîmes is beautiful - very stately and elegant with magnificent fountains and Roman ruins. It is different than any other city in France I've visited and I enjoyed the few day I spent there very much. Anyone traveling in southern France shouldn't miss it.

I haven't been to Montpellier yet, but plan to spend several nights there in October, so I love this information!
