We are planning to have a day in Paris then either take the TGV or rent a car to Strasbourg. We are thinking about take a train or renting a car from Gaur De Nord train station. I would like some pros and cons of each. We are concerned about how much luggage we can take on the train. We are also curious about renting a car (specifically traffic), and getting out of Paris? I know the train will take less time, but with car travel it would be a bit more scenic. Thank you for your feedback.
We took the high speed train from Paris to Strasbourg, stayed there several days. Next, we rented a car and headed to the wine villages, stayed in Riquewehr and spent more time visiting the charming villages.
There is usually one daily departure from Gare de l'Est to Strasbourg on the TGV..direct. I did that once.
You can take as much luggage as you can handle. Considering a TGV to Strasbourg goes at like 200 mph for most of the way, it is a tad faster than an automobile, at least going at the legal limit. There are about 15 direct trains a day, including 1 super cheap Ouigo train where you have to pay extra for luggage. As for scenery, view from a 4-lane super highway, vs high speed railroad track? just goes by quicker on the train.
Thank you, Sam. I appreciate your feedback. We have made a decision to take the TGV. We are looking forward to our time in Strasbourg, and Alsace!
I worked my way to Strasbourg through Burgundy and Alsace. On the way back I trained Strasbourg to Reims for a short stay, then trained back to Paris. A direct train is better if you're going straight there. If the train trip is better than four hours, I always compare prices/times for flights.
I've done a lot of TGV, which is fairly fast (but not always 200 kph). I pack light so Ouigo trains work fine for me and save some money.
Train is by far preferable to a car for this route. You get there a LOT faster (you'll save something like 6 hours round trip) and saves you the stress of driving in and out of Paris.
Also it's way more than one departure a day. Nearly twenty trains daily from Gare de l'Est to Strasbourg, most do the route in 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Thank you all very much for the information. We are definitely taking the train.
